"Duty makes us do things well, but love makes us do them beautifully."
Phillip Brooks 1835–1893
Welcome to the 24th Japan International Art Exchange Exhibition, presented for the 4th consecutive year, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. I invite you to celebrate with us, as you view the creative endeavors of almost 200 artists worldwide. The 2025 show, documented in this beautiful catalog, designed by Mr. Zhang Lianming of China, presents works created out of passion and love for artistic expression. Never out of duty. Through The Exchange and The Museum, a perfect platform has been provided, where artists from diverse backgrounds could share their work, including a “special works” exhibition featuring the art of Louise Durocher.
In a time marked by conflict and division, this exhibition offers more than a showcase of talent. It has created a space for connection. Amidst a backdrop of global unrest – artists have found shelter. A safe place, where their art has become a vehicle through which they could share their life experiences and the cultures that helped create them. Art presented in this context, serves as a powerful bridge, dismantling social barriers that attempt to separate us from each other. Through exchanges, we are reminded of our shared humanity, fostering not only artistic growth, but a deeper comprehension of the intrinsic worth of all individuals.
Thank you to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, for allowing the Exchange to be a recipient of their generous hospitality toward foreign artists. We are humbled and honored to have an opportunity to exhibit our work at Japan’s first public art museum. And we are thrilled to be included on your roster with the Joan Miró show that parallels our own. Thank you sincerely.
In final, my deepest appreciation is extended to Mr. Katsu Shimmin, Chairman of the Exchange, on behalf of myself and all the artists in the exhibition. I am personally grateful for all that he has taught me in our years of working together, and for the doors of opportunity he has forged open – not only for myself, but for thousands of artists who have participated in The Exchange since its inception in 2000. Through Chairman Katsu’s gentle, yet tenacious leadership , and commitment to the pursuit of Art – For Art’s Sake, The 24th Japan International Art Exchange proudly presents yet another dazzling array of talent and achievement. Kudos to Chairman Katsu Shimmin.
